Dying by Arthur Schnitzler, Anthea Bell

5.0

I quite simply believe that for this novel Schnitzler's name should be up there with Dostoevsky. A masterwork of a psychological study that is riveting and quite eerie. Entanglement, death, codependency, and emotional abuse are among the themes explored within this work. I love well written stories about emotionally gruesome situations as it is, but this transcends that into being a true piece of literature. The writing is easy to engage with and is unpretentious yet deceptively complex and layered with subtle meaning. It definitely is the kind of thing that has the power to haunt modern audiences. This book should be much more well known than it is! The poor badly damaged and marked up copy I found to buy was from a relatively obscure used book store. More of a hidden gem, I suppose.
