Surfacing by Kathleen Jamie

3.0

I was looking forward to reading more by Kathleen Jamie, having enjoyed her two previous essay collections, [b:Findings|895779|Findings|Kathleen Jamie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507565933l/895779._SY75_.jpg|880973] and [b:Sightlines|13818573|Sightlines|Kathleen Jamie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1545014653l/13818573._SY75_.jpg|19177747]. However, this collection felt a bit flat. The main essays are about observing archaeological digs in remote locations, not so much about the natural world. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the pace was very slow and there were moments, especially in the Alaska section, where what she chose to include or comment on just seemed incredibly banal. That said, I am still very much open to reading her next book of essays when it comes.
