I enjoyed the Secret Commonwealth, but it is also starkly depressing and falls into age-old stereotypes and tropes regarding age gap romances and the treatment of young women and ethnic minorities in fiction. It’s better than The Subtle Knife, Amber Spyglass, and La Belle Sauvage, but still pales compared to the original.
