The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King
3.0

In this second book of this epic, Roland is drawn along the beach, as three magic doors to our world appear through which he can draw the three. I thought that the writing was definitely improved from the first book. The stories of the three were fairly compelling. What I really feel is missing from this series is purpose. This book managed to have a goal for the end of the book, but I don't feel any goal for the series as a whole. It just doesn't have that epic quality when we are following Roland's quest to the tower to do...something? We don't know why he wants to go there. We don't know what he plans to do. We don't know who he swore to that he would. And rather than making it feel deep and mysterious, it just makes me not really care if he gets there or not.

There are also a couple of weird things. What is up with the east/west swap? At first I thought it was a typo, but now my best guess is it is meant to dislocate the reader? I just find it annoying. And what's with all the crotches? These are my first Stephen King books, so perhaps he always does that? At least I now understand the inspiration for Bert in Sluggy Freelance.
