Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

5.0

*contains some swear words, ranting, and vague, spoiler-y things*

I love Yelena dearly. She's one of those characters that jumped right into my heart the first time she spoke. I guess I'm a sucker for those "I do what I want", "damn the consequences" girls who don't take shit from anyone. She knows what she wants and she might be in a difficult situation, but no one is going to take her life or her control away from her, not without killing her.

So yeah, Yelena. Enough said about her. (Actually, no, I could go on forever) (If you can't tell, I have a thing about liking characters more than the actual book itself)

Of course, the rest of my "good book" checklist requires that the romance progress at a pace that makes sense and that the love interest not be a misogynist. Honestly, I just like it when the important characters are feminists because then the book becomes something empowering. It's not just a story about a girl who falls in love with a guy and they do some stuff, it's a story about a badass bitch who doesn't need a man (or a woman) to get shit done, but she manages to find one anyone, one that actually values her as a person and wants to see her succeed in life. (whoops sorry random rant there)

So obviously Poison Study meets these criteria. The romance isn't obvious from the start, and I honestly wasn't entirely sure if anything would even happen given their personalities. It started slow and then kind of all of a sudden progressed into something more, which given the circumstances, I felt made sense. I look forward to seeing how the author writes this relationship in the later books, as that will be important to whether or not I keep going with the series. I sincerely hope she doesn't mess things up because I just love Yelena so much dammit.
