The Way of Kings
by Brandon Sanderson
The Way of Kings is a masterpiece of modern fantasy. Captivating and unique, it seemed there was always something new to learn about the world just around the corner. Most stories these days start with a perfect world, this starts with three horrible bangs. The 10 heroes of mankind no longer able to fight. The assassination of a king. And slave on the verge of taking his life into his own hands. The world is stuck in a cycle of primitive living and war. Although this seemed like a poor move on Sanderson's part, throwing his audience into what appeared to be the middle of a story, it kept me asking questions and longing to know. If the story hadn't been good, I probably would still had read it just to know more about the world and its cultures. But the story is so good, and I was immediately taken captive by it.
Don't read this if you like sleeping at night.
The pros are good but the characters are excellent. We start with Kaladin, Shallan and Dalinar. They are realistic and so very deep. I loved all three. Without them, the story wouldn't be nearly as good.
This story is full of redemption and self sacrifice. It is a story of broken men and women, who must rise above their trauma to be better people and become what the world (and even the whole Cosmere) needs to survive. All the way from giant crab-like-monsters to Storms that grant small pieces of deific power bound by Oaths. This book holds truly rich morals and might make you cry. I would have to write a very long essay to explain everything about why I love this book.
It carries the gravity of lotr, and the deep characters and relationships of Wingfeather saga, there is a beauty to this story that is hard to find in most any modern fantasy.
If you feel inclined to stop reading because of the characters, don't. They will prove themselves. This is not a story of good people saving the world. This is a story of sinners searching for Honor and Truth. Give them time.
