As always, possible spoilers, so beware.

First Line: Windshield wipers struggled back and forth, clumped with snow.

I was a little hesitant with this series at first. Zombie, werewolves, various types of vampires didn’t freak me out at all; it was Dru that had me worried. She was bad ass and could take care of herself, which was a refreshing quality in a heroine, but she was also grieving. Still dealing with my own grief in real life had me putting this book down more often than usual.

That aside, this book was very good. It wasn’t great because of a few certain things I will get to, but it was very good. Betrayals opens with Dru in the Schola, a place for wulfen and djamphirs. Dru, being the only svetocha in a long while, is extremely valuable. She is presumed safe in the Schola, but it soon becomes clear that someone wants her dead. Christophe is away trying to figure out who is betraying Dru at the Schola and Graves is stuck at the Schola with Dru, learning about being a loup-garou.

I don’t want to give the events away, but during the book Dru learns more things about her mother and is faced with a decision: trust Christophe or don’t trust Christophe. There’s a hint of a love triangle with Christophe and Graves which brings me to one of the things that makes this book not so great. Okay, I understand that a love triangle is practically part of the formula in a supernatural YA book, but seriously? Love should be the last thing on Dru’s mind right now. She kind of knows that, but I just want the girl to heal. And falling in love with two different guys is just going to set her up for heartbreak. What really bugs me about the Dru/Graves/Christophe triangle is that there was OBVIOUSLY something going on with Christophe and Dru’s mom in the past and that is just a huge turn off. I mean maybe I’m just reading between the lines, but I’m definitely picking up that there was a thing with Dru’s mom and Christophe. It’s the same sort of thing that pissed me off initially with the Mortal Instruments series. Jase was so obviously NOT Clary’s brother, but even the notion that he could be was just…gross. Not something I was interested in reading. And if there was something sexual going on with Christophe and Dru’s mom (by the way, do we know her mom’s name? I feel we do, but I can’t remember it) then I am sooo out of here.

That weird and disgusting prospect aside, I did truly enjoy this book. I love being inside Dru’s head. The way the thinks is just so original and refreshing. I enjoy both Graves and Christophe’s company (despite the previously mentioned gag worthy possibility) and the new characters like Dibs and Shanks (who I keep thinking is Skanks, haha).

I will be starting Jealousy probably tomorrow and I can’t wait.

What Happens Next?
Jealousy, the third in the series is out now.

Buy? Rent? Borrow?
This is a tricky one. I have a feeling people will either love this series or hate this series. Borrow the first from a friend and decide if you love it enough to own a copy of.

Cover Appeal:
I like this cover. The model is very pretty and totally looks like how I picture Dru. I love how you can see Graves and Christophe on either side of her. Totally fits.

Final Rating:
Four out of five stars.
