The first half of this book was much like its predecessor: Not a masterpiece by any means, but fun. It took me a couple chapters to get into it, because the first few chapters leaned into the depressing dystopia thing a little more than I was prepared for, but then we were right back on the fun 80s nostalgia train.
And then I got to the second half.
Like the first book, Ready Player Two was full of very long sequences where he described every step the characters took on their quest, when he could (and should) have cut it down to a brief description and then moved on to the actually important stuff. But unlike in the first book, this one would often just throw major story beats in your face. They’d just happen and you’d be kind of confused about where it just came from.
As I read the back half of this book, my rating of it slowly decreased. And then I reached the ending and it plummeted. The ending is just downright weird and, dare I say it, bad.
I could probably write a whole essay about this book if I put my mind to it. But I feel like I’ve covered the important stuff here. It’s by no means one of the worst books I’ve ever read, but it definitely falls on the low end of 3 stars for me. I do not recommend it.
