El dragón rojo by Thomas Harris

I’ve always wanted to read the Hannibal novels after having watched the movies and the show, and I’m glad I finally did. This first novel it’s everything I expected it to be and more, and the knowledge of what was going to happen didn’t make the reading less exciting. In fact I was surprised of how easy it was to read this novel, the plot and the writing style flowed perfectly. The case is grotesque in a very original way and not the kind that one can solve easily, in fact I liked how they investigated every clue but not all of them leaded somewhere useful (as it happens in real life but not always in crime novels). I’ve also really enjoyed how the serial killer wasn’t just a demented person with a shallow motive for the murders, even if it doesn’t justify his acts the author wants us to know why he behaves the way he does, we get to see his traumatic story and how he thinks, he is not just an unidimensional monster. On the same subject it’s also nice to be able to know how Will Graham, main character of the novel, thinks and how his work affects him in a mental and personal way. I would highlight in general how there are so many interesting and very human characters that don’t feel plain to the reader and just as if they were devices for the plot. The whole hunt of the killer plot it’s interesting in itself, and yet there are many nice plot twists that make the novel even more thrilling. The only complain I have with this novel is how short Hannibal Lecter’s intervention is, but at the same time that makes me even more excited to read the rest of the series.
