Horse by Geraldine Brooks
4.0

This was an unusual book for me to read, but I'm glad I did; it was for a book club. In any event, I'm glad I read it. It evoked many emotions as the events of two main timelines progressed. The first begins shortly before the American Civil War, complete with all the racism that prevailed during that time in our history. (One of the bookmarks I'll include at the end of my comments wonders if this book will be banned in places like Florida, Texas, and Missouri.) The second timeline begins in 2019 when two of the major characters are researching the bones of and paintings of the the title character,
the horse 'Lexington.'

In my opinion, Geraldine Brooks structures the stories such that they parallel the cultural similarities of the two timelines, though I'm not convinced that was intentional. Perhaps it stems from my current cynical attitudes about the state of America and, to a lesser amount, the word.

I encourage everyone to give HORSE a try. I invite those who have read the book and this review, to leave a comment. I like being able to judge my view of the world based on the views of others.
