Lily's Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff

3.0

A solid book about a girl in World War II and the Hungarian refugee boy that she befriends, somewhat reluctantly.

The characterization was excellently done. I loved how Lily recognized that she was a liar and that this behavior was alienating her from others, but just couldn't bring herself to stop. Her emotions and behaviors towards her father and grandmother felt very realistic. Albert's worries and obsessions felt real as well, along with his willful self-delusion that his plan will take him to Europe.

The settings was well done, clearly placing the book in the world of the war and the specific milieu of the beach community.

The themes of friendship, truth, and family are solid.
