Storm from the East by Joanna Hathaway

5.0

I’m not even sure where to start - this book kept me holding my breath, anxious, and when I finally had time to breath, it was with the realization how messy war can be.

The writing stylistically is so beautiful, which descriptions of war that are graphic enough for impact, but not too graphic for the sake of it. The plot is a slow build, just like the 1st book, that slowly gains and gains until you can’t really see straight.
I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could due to the complicated mess of alliances and different kingdoms with their own ambitions, but this author is so talented she deserves a boost up to 5 (and it does feel realistic that everyone is for themselves).

That’s the most impactful thing I took away from this book: No one wins in war. Everyone is both victim and abuser, and the common folk take the brunt of the hit for the upper classes’ ambitions.

Athens perspective in this book seems much more important and impactful, both plot wise and character arc wise, than Ali’s. Ali seems a little naive, thinking peace is possible at every turn. I guess it makes since given she is a princess, though.
I did feel like I couldn’t get behind Ali’s character arc in this book. At the end, I wish I had more insight into why Athan chooses the path he does.

Needless to say, I will be enjoying the third book as soon as I can. Readers will always say we want more, more MORE.
