macswell 's review for:
American Psycho
by Bret Easton Ellis
Genuinely gratuitous depictions of evil (violence, sexual violence, etc.) next to hilarious & biting moments of satire of the American yuppie class. I was really delighted at Bateman's heightening anxiety when Luis kept confessing his beautiful, gay love for him. Just when the repetitiveness of the book started to tire, Easton Ellis's artistry comes out. The deterioration of Bateman's psyche and the abstraction of his inner life - and the little it ultimately does - makes for some really beautiful passages.
My favourite part was when Bateman is lamenting that the kid he murders at the zoo is an unsatisfying victim because a kid only has lived a short amount of time and made few connections -- all whilst watching the kid's mum screaming & crying! Money is so heartless and evil
