Butterface
by Avery Flynn
To paraphrase A Cinderella Story: love the book, hate the title.
I had been on a book hangover since Pachinko and I was putting books down left or right. My 3 ReadOrReject books were total stinkers. Because the books I brought to work weren't up to par, I resorted to ebooks on my phone during breaks. This was the book I chose and it was lovely. The title absolutely turned me off, but the content was great. I finally got what I've always wanted: an ugly heroine. Our protagonist had a giant honker and the book continuously showed how cruel the world can be to those less than perfect. I've always longed to read a book with where the love interest wasn't picture perfect and the man loved her despite her flaws. Gina was wonderful to root for and I can always find a little bit of myself in every Avery Flynn heroine. Her giant nose and self consciousness was very easy to relate to as a reader. I'm not dissatisfied with my own sniffer but who doesn't have body issues. The theme of this series has a great message, even if the titles are horrendous. I suppose Butterface is a better moniker than Hatchet Face in Crybaby.

I loved the way the met through an impromptu Kiss Cam at a wedding and the way their relationship developed. The true message came through on what's on the inside that really counts rather than the outside. I think this theme is underutilized in not just romance, but media as a whole. I try to treat others with kindness regardless of what they look like. I always root for the underdog, weirdos, pariahs, and outsiders. I can always find myself in those different than the norm and Butterface helped show that in such a lovely way. The only part I didn't like was the miscommunication, but that unfortunately part of the plot. The book would have been finished immediately if they talked to each other honestly, eh? I love seeing the various Harbor City citizens popping up in the background like the Ice Knights players and their respective staff members. I hope to explore more in the series. I didn't like The Negotiator series, but I have a feeling her later books are better. As I said before, the title was cringe city but it's on the inside that counts!
