Cutting for Stone
by Abraham Verghese
I came across this very randomly while looking for an ebook that my library had available for instant checkout (there aren't many worth reading). I read a few pages of the preview and was completely hooked. While it was obvious Verghese is a physician from his technical details of surgery and medicine, it is also obvious that he can expertly craft a compelling story and pack it with the human details that make characters come alive. I felt totally transported into the main character's life, and came to love the members of his family.
My only complaint was his relationship with
Overall, however, I greatly enjoyed reading this book and will look for other books by this author.

Genet. I wish Verghese had written signs of more interest from her side. Marion's obsession with her and the determination that they *should* be together seemed a little creepy and misogynistic without more positive feedback from her. Her actions showed an immature girl just fooling around, not someone the least bit interested in Marion. Marion's unfair display of entitlement / ownership of Genet made his character much less sympathetic, and the overall story far less tragic for me.Overall, however, I greatly enjoyed reading this book and will look for other books by this author.
