Song of Susannah by Stephen King
1.0

i love the character susannah, so it pains me to say that a book with her name in the title of it (for, by the way, no reason that i can determine) is one of the worst books i've ever read. this novel epitomizes all of the worst qualities of the dt series: to name a couple, needless and cutesy meta-fiction, and silly (and probably offensive) monologues from the perspective of a person with some cartoonish strain of disassociative personality disorder.

what's worse: the small amount of success it could've had as a novel, the vaguely captivating pay-offs it promises (the birth of mordred, the conclusion to jake and callahan's rescue of susannah) don't even take place until the next god damn novel! such a disappointment. if it wasn't for the (surprisingly) good quality of the final dt book, _song of susannah_ would've ruined the entire series. it is a suspense-sacrificing diversion from a plot that has been building tension since the first book, and contributes nothing more than a list of mistakes for which the final novel of the series just barely compensates.
