The Snowman by Jo Nesbø
3.0

Now this is going to be a bit contentious, seeing as how everyone who has read this one, just raves over it. This, is also being adapted for a movie, starring Michael Fassbender , and that would be quite something to watch. Having acknowledged all of that, I have to demur from popular public opinion, and say that as an avid Nesbo fan, this is not one of his finest.
It is the first 'serial killer' case though, bona-fide and genuine, after all the false trails in previous cases, this time around, Harry Hole finally gets to catch a Norwegian serial killer. So why am I a bit peeved - because I could guess who it was, right in the start itself. It is that obvious, and to me, the rest of the book read more like a wait for Harry and Co to catch up with what was so obvious to me as a reader. Maybe that's also the beauty about this one, that it's so obvious that at times you want to break that third wall, step in, and shake Harry up, and tell him to open his eyes.
I will say this though, that at a pivotal moment, I did have doubts as to whether I was right after all, and that passed within a few pages, leaving me comparing this one with 'The Devil's Star', a case that I still would call Nesbo's best. This is quite a dark book though, and rather scary, so again, full marks to Nesbo for writing really evocative fiction - you will see snow, and see snowmen, and go and check the locks on your front door (even when you aren't the killer's intended victim profile).
I will be waiting for the movie, just to see how this one looks on the screen, with Fassbender as Hole. As far as serial killer mysteries go, this one is definitely worth a read, so pick a copy before the movie is out!
