This has echoes, more than once, of my favorite musical, Sunday in the Park with George. Partly it’s the setting: artists in France. But more than that, it’s the use of painting as a metaphor for life. One of my favorite lines in the musical is near the end, where the painter Georges Seurat says, “White. A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities.” Yoachim takes that and adds immortality. There’s so many more possibilities when you are not limited by time. The strength of this piece isn’t necessarily the idea or even the theme, but how Yoachim connects the two and weaves in color and painting and the passage of time.
