The Rector's Daughter by F.M. Mayor
4.0

This is, in its quiet way, a deeply shocking exposure of the low value placed on the lives of women in the late Victorian and early 20C era. Duty, above all, is the guiding principle, and duty in regard to the family, especially the father. The narrowness of the heroine's life is painfully explored and the absolute disregard for her own possible happiness or fulfilment are starkly portrayed. The writing is understated and powerful, there is no tub-thumping! It's a matter of show, don't tell. Marvellous.
