Boy's Life
by Robert R. McCammon
One of the quintessential coming of age stories. The story of Cory Mackerson growing up in the small town of Zephyr, Alabama is magical, real, dangerous, and sad. Each recounting of an event feels like its own little snippet of a life brought together to tell a story of accepting what it means to be an adult in a sometimes cruel world. Cory's interactions with his parents are some of my favorites I've ever seen put to paper.
The story itself takes fun twists and turns and it is a joy solving the central mystery alongside Cory. The pacing is excellent, and the large variety of characters really makes you feel like you are exploring a real town with real inhabitants. The book tackles a wide range of themes from maturing, racism, changing relationships, experiencing the harsh realities of life, and just about anything else. There is an element of the fantastic in the story as well. Despite being set in the real world the town is populated with ghosts, monsters, and all types of magical things that seem to come straight from the mind of a child who likes to make up stories. I highly recommend the story and think at a minimum you'll like the story that is told.
