There There
by Tommy Orange
After reading There, There by Tommy Orange, I immediately wanted to go back and *study* it: map out the impossibly complex web of interconnected characters; read more about the historical facts dropped in the non-fiction interludes; check out the music, books, and films mentioned by the myriad characters (Orange released a Spotify playlist as companion to the book). The novel ricochets through different POVs and voices to tell the story of urban Native Americans living in Oakland. CA, hurtling toward a climactic pow-wow at the Coliseum. I had trouble keeping tack of some of the characters and relationships, but was still able to enjoy each of their stories and voices when I became immersed in each section. The book is not subtle, but it is ambitious, complex, compelling, thought-provoking, fascinating, and different.
