From the New York Times bestselling author of Dealing with Dragons comes this timeless fantasy, about an ordinary girl who discovers she's the heir to a dark throne, and must find her place between her life on Earth and her magical inheritance.

"A heart-stopping, unique adventure for all!" —Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Kayla is just an ordinary girl . . . or so she thinks. When a day at the state fair is interrupted by the news that she’s the daughter of a “Dark Lord,” she and her family are quickly whisked to another world—one that’s chock-full of magic but lacking in technology!

As her family encounters fantastical creatures in place of their Earthly gadgets, Kayla must prepare for the unpreparable: meeting her father, the Dark Lord himself, for the very first time. All Kayla wants is to go home, but she must learn magic to do so. The catch? For the Dark Lord’s daughter, the road to mastering magic is filled with evil traditions.

Kayla, her adoptive mom and brother are spending a day at the state fair when a strange man appears and whisks them away to an alternate world where it turns out that Kayla is the heir to the ruler, the late Dark Lord of Zaradwin, who was hidden from him by being sent to earth. Kayla must navigate a world she never knew existed with its magic and political intrigue, figure out who she can and cannot trust and maybe find a way for her, her mom and brother, to return to their world.

We have a spunky fourteen-year-old main character who is, in many ways, mature beyond her years having seen her adoptive father die of cancer and how it affected her adoptive mother. The world she finds herself in is one that frightens her mother while Kayla increasingly feels more and more at home. She is not what the people of her kingdom expect as she starts to shake things up by reacting differently than expected - refusing to automatically exile or execute people. The other characters are interesting as well, from Kayla’s brother Del who, even though earth-born, appears to have magical ability as well, a tablet that transformed into a talking familiar when they crossed over to this world and dragons and spirits.

I was incredibly pleased to see a new book by Ms Wrede. This is a world and characters I would hope to see more of; so, hopefully, we will see more of Kayla’s journey. Highly recommended.
