Meh. This probably would have worked really well as a short-story. There just didn't seem to be enough going on for a novel. I guess I'm not that interested in the events of the sixties. Or -and these seems increasingly likely - I'm not interested in an eleven year olds take on it. There's a lot of potentially interesting things happening to people that aren't Franny. Like her sister getting involved in the civil rights movement, and her dad on the air base possibly preparing for war, and the uncle with PTSD who's probably receiving ECT off screen or the kid who spent a year in Pakistan. I would probably really like a book about anything of these, but nothing happens to Franny and that's who we're stuck with.
