I don’t have a whole lot of exposure to or interest in the Gothic genre, but it was still easy for me to recognize the Gothic elements the author incorporated here, which was interesting. But I’m disappointed that it didn’t really feel distinctly Mexican. In fact, because of how the story is set up, the 1950s Mexico setting doesn’t actually feel very different from 1800s England. If I had realized that the setting was going to feel so English, not Mexican, I wouldn’t have started reading the book. But props to the author for nailing the overall creepy aesthetic and senses of dread, disgust, and haunting. About half or maybe two thirds of the way through the book, I started saying WTF WTF WTF and kept saying that until the very end.
Note about the audiobook production: the narrator’s British accent is pretty bad, in my opinion. This occasionally made it hard to tell which character was speaking, when a narrator with better accent capabilities would have made it super clear. Otherwise, I generally enjoyed this book as an audiobook.
