Providence by Caroline Kepnes
4.0
A bit of a departure from Kepnes's famous You series, this is a sci-fi thriller that just doesn't quite come together.
Jon, an awkward loner who comes across as a bit emotionally stunted, is kidnapped while walking through the woods to avoid his bully Carrig. He wakes up 4 years later, no memories of what has happened to him, with a note that says "we did good work down here". And soon people around him start dying... He runs away to avoid hurting Chloe, the girl who's always stood by him. Years later, a detective in Providence, RI who's nicknamed Eggs (last name: DeBenedictus) is trying to piece together the mystery of a string of young twenty- and thirty-somethings all dropping dead of heart attacks.
I really enjoyed the characters and I generally enjoyed the plot. But this just felt like a draft at points that had so much potential but needed a bit more time to cook. There's also a few deus ex machina — Eggs very easily guesses the fake name Jon is going by (Peter Feder, from Peter Parker + a character from Grown Ups 2 and you're telling me he just GOT THAT so quickly???) — which made the resolutions feel unearned.
Overall — enjoyable ride but with some flaws.
