Tokyo Night Parade by J.P. Takahashi

5.0

Tokyo Night Parade is one of the most gorgeous picture books I've read so far this year. The illustrations were the first thing that brought my attention to this book when I was looking for new picture books to add to my school library.

In this story, Eka is anticipating the hyakkiyagyō, the Night Parade of One Hundred demons. She doesn't get to do it anymore as she now lives in New York but as she is back in Japan for a visit, she is excited to be a part of it. At the same time, she is worried about when she will be able to return once she leaves for America again. This story is told through the beautiful art that brings the magic of the night parade to life with a wide variety of the yōkai that join Eka in the parade. It is a beautiful story of Japanese culture, being of two worlds, and a sense of homecoming and belonging to these two world.
