Sounds Like Love
by Ashley Poston
You know a book connects with your soul by the number of times you get goosebumps throughout the story. For me, it was at least three times, which is three more than usual.
Grief is just a love song in reverse.
I was super reluctant to read this one. I have adored two of Poston’s books and enjoyed a third, so when I saw a few advanced reviewers whose opinions I respect saying the story wasn’t as good as her previous books, that they didn’t connect with the main characters or the song written in the story, I was disappointed. But I’m so glad my book club gave me reason enough to pick it up. And then ended up wondering what the heck had they read because it wasn’t at all like that for me…
Granted, I did enjoy this story via audiobook, so maybe that had an impact? When I saw the narrator was Patti Murin who created the song in this book with husband Colin Donnell (yum), I had to supplement my book read with the audio. And she did a fantastic job. I loved to hear her sing the bits of the song as it came together in the story.
I was impressed by the growth in Poston’s writing. The phrasing was lyrical and poetic in itself. It sucked me in and made me feel the emotions in my bones. I loved the chapter headings and all the musical references in the book. Makes me want to put a playlist(or old school mixtape) together just to relive the story all over again.
We are poetry in motion,
We are bittersweet goodbyes.
Your heart sings softly in my ear
and it sounds like love tonight.
I’m giving this 4.25 stars, coming down from a full 5 because there did seem to be some inconsistencies on how the magic ability worked, and my logical brain spent too much time analyzing how it works. But otherwise, I consider this a Poston masterpiece.
