I read this book quickly both because it was easy and because it was oddly compelling. It's a clear mishmash of Fourth Wing, Divergent, and a little Hunger Games for good measure. The whole book is first-person POV from Wren Darlington (at least her improbable name is a fake one). She's 20, of course, and secretly super powerful at telepathic stuff that's very illegal. And a great shot.
We get a decent amount of world building, which I always appreciate, and some random dystopian slang and swears, which I appreciate less. It slows down the rhythm ever time I read "keen" or "hellf**k". Silly. Oh yeah, I also got a hint of Octavia Butler's Parable series, minus the deeper work on climate and racial issues, but much better paced.
Yes, there are more than a few spicy scenes. I liked the pace of the romance and the spice. Everyone else guessed the "big twist" immediately too, right?
This book covers a period of months and doesn't pull punches with character deaths or the overall stakes. Mostly. Our super hot MMC pulls a lot of strings for our FMC and she only questions it a little.
As a friend put it, the last quarter of the book gets really exciting and nearly justifies the whole build up and makes you excited for the next book. I like a dystopian romantasy for a change so I'm here for it.
