The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

3.0

I’m sort of in two minds about this book.
One one hand you have the writing style which I found beautifully poetic and very poignant at times. The description is so vivid and colourful and really places you in the world of the book.
However, I found the storyline itself relatively boring. Other than- and up to a point including- Gatsby himself, most of the characters felt very flat with either no backstory or a very generic, shallow one. It certainly got more interesting toward the end (and took a much darker turn  than I expected) but it felt too little too late.
I had high expectations for this book and I just feel like it didn’t quite meet them. The writing style was a massive redeeming factor though. I’ll be studying this book for my a-level English so my opinions may or may not change… we’ll have to wait and see :)
