In this cold and dark January, I wanted to read a book that would bring me back to the cozy and festive spirit of December. Normally, romance isn't my go-to genre, but Lovelight Farms sounded like the perfect book to give me the warm feelings I was looking for. As soon as I started reading Lovelight Farms I imagined myself at the Christmas tree farm with its ice skating rink, gingerbread baking house and Christmas barn. Add a small town village, social media contest and friends-to-lovers plot and you'll get why I felt like I was reading a Hallmark movie. I'm a big sucker for Hallmark movies this time of year, but turns out that I need my books to have a bit more depth. Although the scenery of Lovelight Farms gave me the winter wonderland feels I needed, the plot of Lovelight Farms unfortunately felt underwhelming. Without giving any spoilers, I can say that the plot was very predictable, the slowburn friends-to-lovers aspect was done well until the end left me frustrated and the plot of the social media contest ultimately didn't play a major role at all. That being said, I did enjoy the characters a lot. Luka was a precious sweetheart of course, but the side characters especially added a special touch to the story that made Lovelight Farms so much more heartwarming. Beckett walking around the Christmas tree farm with kittens dozing in his pockets, Luka's mom showing up at Stella's doorstep with Italian food, Layla always making time to help Stella with her struggles and the highschool children going out of their way to support Stella in the social media contest. All in all, Lovelight Farms definitely wasn't a perfect story, but if you're looking for a slowburn friends-to-lovers romance with fake dating, small town winter vibes and a great set of side characters this is just the book for you.
