Count to Ten by Karen Rose

4.5

Because it’s the only audiobook I could get from my library, I am reading this before any of the others in the Chicago series, and I do recognize a few characters that appear in later series. But I was able to follow along just fine. That’s one thing that’s really cool about Karen Rose—each story can stand on its own but is at the same time connected to a larger universe. And as for this story, I loved it!

The rapist/murder/arsonist is Jack-of-all-atrocities hunting down the people he blames for his abuse and the death of his brother while they were children in the foster system. Fire Marshall Reed Solliday and Chicago PD Detective Mia Mitchell end up working together on the case to find him. Of course, as they work together they develop feelings for each other, so the romance is somewhat predictable. But, like all Karen Rose novels, they each bring baggage to the relationship that makes it difficult for them to commit to a new relationship. I really enjoyed the depth of the characters and how they work through their trauma throughout the course of the story.

As far as the mystery aspect of the story goes, it also is quintessential Karen Rose. We get the perspective of the story’s villain, but his identity isn’t revealed until near the end of the story. She introduces several different characters that have a decent chance of actually being the murderer, so it is nearly impossible to guess which it would be (I say nearly, because I totally guessed it!). Anyway, it was an exciting mystery that came to a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommend!
