I have been looking forward to reading this book since the first time I picked up Stone Butch Blues years ago. I wanted to know more and more about Pratt and Feinberg. This memoir gave me the insight I wanted on the seemingly hidden Pratt (she was only hidden because I didn’t know how to use the internet effectively when I first found out about her).
The book is written in a way that is easy to read and follow, while still being captivating. It was not as good as Bone Black, but it was in the same vein which I greatly appreciated. This book took me on an adventure that I was a willing participant in. There was some information from the author’s early life, but thankfully I had just read her book Crime Against Nature so I could get a more in-depth depiction of the time when she started to openly love women.
The book tells of a few partners, but never really names them. It makes it feel like Pratt is keeping them private because they are something she cherishes, not because she doesn’t want to tell us about them. It made the love she has for these women seem even stronger. I love how conflicted she seems when she first starts to date Feinberg and how it was never an issue of could there be love. Instead the issue was how do I explain this love without losing my identity as a lesbian. This was a large step forward in my mind when it comes to depiction of transgender people.
This book was one I wanted to read everyday and was one I gladly read everyday. I would have to force myself to go to bed or to go back to work instead of sitting down and reading it all in one go. This is a book I would gladly give out to people and will read again if the chance ever arises.
