Love From A to Z by S.K. Ali

5.0

Marvel: I got to believe in love again because of Adam and Zayneb

Oddity: I almost lost it because of Adam's Illness.

Love From A to Z is my third book with Muslim/Asian Representation. The first and second being Life of Pi and When Dimple met Rishi.

Now I will do my best to contain my excitement and write a well articulated review— who the hell am I kidding?? I'm not going to do that.

Oddities:
The story opens to our main first character's, Zayneb who is a Hijabi girl living in London. She experiences constant Islamophobia from her school teacher.
Now, I live in Nigeria, and I've never had to think about how Muslim feel about the little side remarks other religions say about their way of life or how we often ask inconsiderate questions.

I think it never really occurred to me to see Muslims as different because my maternal relatives are all Muslims. Its safe to say I'm a Muslim too because it's a part of my mother and she's a part of me.

So reading about Zayneb's experiences with the constant questions about her dressing, covering of her hair and degrading remarks about her faith and way of life, it made me sad because I see this everyday. Like every other person, we don't really speak up for our Muslim friends and family. So like Zayneb's Grandma, speak up and be happy you get the opportunity to stand for what is right.

The second main character is Adam who has multiple sclerosis— an autoimmune neuro degenerative disease where the myelin sheaths, protective covering of neurons are being destroyed by the body itself.
I remember studying about autoimmune disease and wondered why one's body would just decide to attack itself.

The pain these conditions bring to the patients, loved ones, family, and friends. S. K. Ali showed the representation so well.

Adam was a human character. He was attractive and had the regular romcom male features but he showed he was hurting. Oh my goodness, whenever it came to his point of view, I mentally lost it because he was so sincere and genuine.

Marvel:

Zayneb is a Headstrong character. Damn, I wish I could be like her and not give up on causes I cared about. But then again, how do you expect someone to stop fighting oppression when it's their everyday reality?"

I loved how much Zayneb and Adam held their family's opinions in high regards and the bond between the parents and siblings.
This book gave everything I wanted on a slow burn romance.

I mean I could feel the love between Zayneb and Adam and they didn't even have to be a smutty scene to show it. The Dialogues were perfect. The description and showing of emotions 100%.

"Don't stop fighting what is right."
