The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde

5.0

It feels almost disrespectful, as a white person, to "review" such an incredible gift that was so obviously written, first and foremost, for black survivors of breast cancer, but it also feels important to express my absolute gratitude, even in a small way, that this book exists. For a long time, I have put off reading The Cancer Journals for fear they would stir up my (often overwhelming) anxiety around the topic of cancer. In avoiding it, I did myself a great disservice. This work is, if anything, indescribably empowering and uplifting. It is also as relevant now, as we struggle as a society to contend with a crumbling, inequitable medical industrial system and Covid19--a mass disabling event that is leaving many feeling hopeless to contend with their own health struggles--as it was when it was written. Thank you, Audre Lorde.
