Sticks and Stone by Grace McGinty

A fantastic read! 5 stars!

It doesn't really matter if you like hockey or not, this is a really great read! It's unlike any I've read before. The FMC, Nova, learns from two police officers knocking on her door that her parents were killed in a car accident. Shortly after that news, she gets more news - there's an orphaned child, and she's the only blood relative. After she agrees to take it in, she hears from the adoption agency that there's someone ELSE interested in adopting him. Three "honorary uncles" who knew the mother. She goes to court and wins full custody but agrees to keep the three men in the child's life. This involves her moving closer to them, and them convincing her staying nearby is best for both her and the baby.

It was sweet, it had drama, it had character building, it had growth, it had depth. It even caused my eyes to water! I definitely recommend this book. :)

What's amazing for me is that I learned after reading this story in the acknowledgments that the author (Grace) is AUSTRALIAN. I, a Canadian, have a few Aussie friends, and took them to a couple of hockey games when they came to visit once and helped (with mostly my husband's knowledge) them understand the game and the league. She thanks a couple of people for their help in learning about it and getting details right, and did she ever! Between the leagues, games, traveling, training, etc., she got it all! She probably knows more about the sport than many Canadians and Americans, now!
