I am absolutely in love with this modern retake of Beowulf!
I never could have imagined this particular version being so well done in both tone and wording that not just worked but was magical and faithful to the source but so new at the same time.
The authors use of alliteration was fun and fast and meant to be read aloud. Which is what I did – I read it aloud to myself and then the opening to my sister so she could hear what I heard. The book has a great rhyme and rhythm due to the longer sentences and alliteration that just works so well as the book progresses.
Being a middle grade book, his was ripe with illustrations. Ever page! Some to match the words, others to drive the narrative, but all amazingly detailed, rich, chaotic, and fun. So many different looks and a wide variety of characters and shapes that no color or additional fuss was needed. That for me , is a great sign, the stark ess of black and white allows for the illustrations to shine and oh how they shine.
I'm hoping these two come together to give us more in the future because, I, for one can't wait to see what they can do again!
