The only thing going for this is a fast pace and a cinematic sensibility. That makes sense. This is the novelization of the author’s own screenplay. So it’s also not shocking that the book adds absolutely nothing to the story that the movie doesn’t more interestingly deliver.

But my real issue with this book is how awful its politics are. Sexist, imperialist, classist, racist, homophobic. And it promotes Christian Zionism with the grace of a conspiracy theorist.

The characters are dumb, the plot is implausible and goofy. There’s very little horror in Damien himself; he’s barely in the story.

Also, did that have to insert movie photos where they spoil the whole plot before the reader’s gotten more than 85 pages in? I’ve seen the movie a few times already, but still, dumb marketing move.

This book is a huge disappointment of pulp nonsense. Unsure if I’ll end up hating the movie too after a rewatch.
