An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
4.0
So there’s a bit to unpack here.
I loved the characters and the worldbuilding it was amazing, each character had their own flaws and strengths which this book highlights in detail. The worldbuilding portrays the inequalities, differences and struggles of the quarters with the Scholars being the lowest.
The book itself was a struggle to get into, the first 200 pages it felt like nothing happened, there was violence, the start of a trial and loads of promises of vengeance, spying and freedom. But the last part of the book had me hooked, the stakes were higher, the relationships between characters started to flourish or ruin.
I hate the idea of a love triangle between Laia, Keenan and Elias. There should even be an option (sorry Keenan but you are more like an older brother than a lover)
I feel like this book may be slightly overhyped as it is good but not great, I will be reading the next book to see what happens next as after that ending I need to!
Just wish the beginning had a bit more engagement.
