carstaiirs 's review for:
Spectred Isle
by KJ Charles
slow-paced
I always enjoy this author, but there was something about Saul and Randolph that felt special to me. It's funny how sometimes those books I keep putting off for no particular reason end up being a favorite.
I found the worldbuilding at the beginning a bit confusing and a longer encounter between the protagonists took its time to arrive, but when they finally have their first proper conversation I was hopelessly and instantly charmed. The chemistry, the flirting, the connection...everything came together in such a satisfying way.
There's always some suspension of disbelief needed in romance stories that only have one book to develop the couple's feelings into love. Fortunately, K.J. Charles knows how to get the characters there without much need of it. Saul and Randolph had such a compelling dynamic, as well as strong defined personalities, that I had no trouble believing they were completely gone for each other by the end of the book.
The supernatural elements were also delightfully unsettling and atmospheric.
