The Red Palace
by June Hur
The Red Palace is the first historical mystery I’ve ever read, and it drew me in like no book has in a long time. Based on the story of a real life Korean prince, Hur did such an incredible job recontextualizing such a complex and dark moment in history.
I found myself relating to the main character, Hyeon, in so many ways despite my life circumstances being so different. Her compassion and drive had me rooting for her the whole book. The romantic storyline is what all slow burns should be. The slow build of feelings between Hyeon and Eojin was so well done.
The most compelling part of this book was the mystery, and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Every reveal was unexpected but well built into the story.
Can’t wait to read June Hur’s other books and whatever she has coming next.
