My first time with this author, keeping my personal goal of 2025 alive. Of all the books I read I want 33% of them to be new authors to me. This is also a Canadian author which is a double win for me as I am Canadian.

I was in search of an Assassin based book. I asked ChatGPT to list me a bunch so I could find some new characters to delve into. This book was on that list, along with five or six more I have to get to as well. I love Assassin and ranger based fantasy novels.

So the story itself is good. The main characters are interesting and do a good bit of growing through the story. A couple of characters in here that I am quite enjoying hating. I take that as a sign of a good writer. The character is alive enough to have a love/hate relationship with.

A new presentation on the halfling fantasy race. I have been reading fantasy for over 45 years and this one for me anyway is an interesting twist. I do not dislike it. It did give me pause to think.

The use of magic is minimal and seems rather rare. I dont find this to be a bad thing, just when dealing with elves and the fae I expected more. Again, not a bad thing, just not what I expected.

All in all there is enough here to get me on to book two at some point. But like I said, a few other new author, assassin themed books to look into as well.
