The Stand by Stephen King

5.0

In high school I read a lot. By which I mean I ate up Stephen King/Dean Kootnz/Michael Chriton like I drank Mountain Dew. Which was as often as possible.

I still feel pretty bad about all that Mountain Dew.

But my love for this King novel still endures to this day. Why? Because this book is epic. It follows a huge cast of characters through a post-apocalyptic world through events they don’t fully comprehend.

A super flu come through America (and the rest of the world it is assumed) and kills 99% of everyone. Then God and The Devil step in and divvy up the survivors in America for a showdown. Why were they chosen? It’s not really clear, but it’s not important, the showdown is coming anyway.

What really interested me in the book were the characters, there were so many really interesting and well developed characters in the story. The way King described a world in the wake of a giant plague was also really great, and some of my favorite parts were little descriptions of characters and locations that played no real significance.
