The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz

2.0

I initially picked this up years ago from my local library, but failed to be able to get into it. I finally decided that I was going to buy it and force myself to finish this novel. I was intrigued by the idea that this woman and her dog would be running from unseen force. This book had me hooked and I was able to read it within three days, while I was at work. I'm not going to lie about the ending though.. it was pretty weak. This whole book leads up to this epic conclusion of the two main characters and the amazing Golden retriever going to battle against a sociopath and a controlling, crime-boss ex husband. However, it seemed like Koontz was in trouble with a deadline and this story fell flat at the end. The two main characters end up getting shot trying to defeat the villains and the "magical" dog/angel child magically heal their wounds and bring them back to life? I guess he was hinting to this end all the way through, but it was so rushed that the end fight was only about a page long. Then he tries to sum it up in the end by saying that Amy and her lover were married, after Amy rejecting his proposal.

All in all, I was really disappointed and left with a few questions at the end. I will still read other Koontz books but this isn't one that I can revisit.
