The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

1.0

‘“Nothing but a symbol?” repeated Enrique quietly. “People die for symbols. People have hope because of symbols. They’re not just lines. They’re histories, cultures, traditions, given shape.”’ - Roshani Chokshi, The Gilded Wolves

I don’t know how but The Gilded Wolves really managed to make me love it and hate it at the same time. Because guys, these characters. They are some of the most beautifully written characters I have had the pleasure of reading. Each one was crafted with so much care and this stays true through to the end. But I loved them all from the very beginning. They were all so interesting and their banter was seriously hilarious.

And that my friends, is the only good thing about this book. Pretty much everything else just kinda sucked. It was so, so, slow. Even after 100+ pages, the plot had not gone anywhere. But I was pulled into continuing because the characters were so enchanting. And then, when the plot actually got going I almost wished it hadn’t because it was just so all over the place and didn’t make much sense. And do not even get me started on the ending. It was really just a mess. It’s as if so much dedication and energy went towards the characters that there wasn’t enough left for anything else. However, I actually really enjoyed Roshani Chokshi’s writing. I really hope it doesn’t sound like I’m hating on her. I just wish more time was spent on constructing the plot or world-building.

Seeing as the only thing I enjoyed about this book is the characters, I felt like I could only give it one star. It makes me sad that these characters didn’t get a better story, but you guys could skip this one.
