Mer by Joelle Sellner

4.0

Loved, the only issue I had that you could tell it was going to have a short run, because the plot of the two fishes out of water falling in love, is barely touched on. They meet, the boy saves girl's life, they fall in love. The conflict of the girl choosing between family and love, is also barely touched on. It would have felt like more of a conflict, if her father weren't such an asshole. Four months after the death of their mother, the dad decides to pick up their lives and move back out to his hometown. It's implied that her death crushes him, but you wouldn't know it. His expectations of his kids and the way he just throws shit at them, is kind of absurd. There is never a moment when the two characters connect and try to become better towards each other, the father never tries to connect with his daughter, and she has no interest and earning his trust back. His sudden dislike for the merboy when she comes home late, came out of nowhere. Nothing is ever really....resolved. It was a good read, but I wish it had been longer, in order that the characters could have been fleshed out better and given more of an opportunity to develop into whole characters. The art was fantastic, and the mer's and the rusalka were especially creative.
