What a bizarre book. Modernist writers like Calvino and Nabokov should be turning in their graves over the cleverness of this book. Because it goes there. It's one unique reading experience, and even if the contents don't interest you, read it for the process. There are multiple ways to approach the text, but this is dependent upon your reading style and what's most comfortable for you.

As a heads up, this is what the interior of the book is like: you have the text of the actual "book" book. Written inside the margins are notes occurring between two researchers, Eric and Jennifer. At times the notes are overlapping, chaotic, and written at different points in time. Pay attention to the ink used, because this will help you make a mental map of the timeline of events. You should be able to differentiate between the early and later notes. I mention this because if you read everything on the page all at once, it can be a little overwhelming. You'll lose interest. You'll give up on the story.

The "story" that you want to follow is up to you. You can read the book within the book (Ship of Theseus), or you can read just the notes in the margins which tell the love/mystery story between Eric and Jennifer. Personally, I didn't care to read the "Ship of Theseus" text and read only the notes. This was more than enough to grasp the context of Ship of Theseus, the mysterious "S," the love stories, and etc etc.

So, all in all, I was pleased and excited to read through this book. It took me back to my younger, Lemony Snicket days.
