The Journey of Little Charlie
by Christopher Paul Curtis
After Charlie’s father unexpectedly dies, Charlie and his mother are expected to immediately pay off his father’s debts. The slave catcher, Cap’n Buck, explains that Charlie can work off the debt by helping him capture a family of runaway slaves in Michigan. Cap’n Buck is a nasty individual with many secrets hiding beneath the surface. Charlie will need to be careful to stay on the Cap’n’s good side, but he will also need to make tough decisions about what is morally right.
This book was difficult and not compelling. The dialog is expressed through dialect, which is an interesting twist on the traditional novel of the time period (which traditionally has only the African Americans speaking in dialect). I have always had difficulty reading books in dialect and typically do not like them. I both listened to and read this book. Typically, I like the audiobook reader, but his southern accent was not as authentic as was necessary for this novel. I wasn’t compelled by this story. However, I have not read the other book set in this same world and perhaps I would have developed a stronger connection if I had met those characters. Typically, I enjoy this author’s works, but this one I struggled to finish.
