The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey
3.0

“Later I saw that change came as change always comes, from a chain of events with a long history, too long to see from back to front, till it come.”

I finished this book a few hours ago and I am still stuck in the book. This was not my usual genre, definitely not my usual read. This book is a modern day "classic" if you get what I mean. The writing style is very oldish with concepts that you would find in a classic. It was a very very special read.

I kept putting it down when I first read it because the writing for me was very hard to get through in the beginning. But i you get use to it after a couple of chapters

The story is told in three alternating voices - an unnamed omniscient third person narrator, David's journal, written as an older man in 2015, and Aycayia's own words, which are told in blank verse. The writer is very talented in potraying their voices through their narration. Their styles, the shapes of their thought are all wonderfully presented before you. I liked the length of the story. The short 200 page provided so much more impact to the story.

Do take note that this is not a love story but more of a literary read , a story about love. This story explore a whole lot of themes that I find extremely intriguing. The concept of love obviously but also themes impacted by race, greed, colonialism & slavery, jealousy. It explores questions like the relationship between men and nature, men and gods, what does it mean to be half and half? what does it mean to never truly belong to one or the other? How do you go on when you know where the story ends? This was an very intriguing read here you find yourself analysing the metaphors, the story as a whole. A much thought-provoking read.

As much as I enjoyed the story and the unique style of writing I am deducting points from it because of two things. I found myself more drawn to the subplot and I wished that it was the main story. The subplot is about a biracial couple who struggles between history and love. It was something I wanted to see more, something I wished that could've been way deeper and further the impact of the read. another thing is I wished that some things were explained more like the nature of the curse and also the connection between the mermaid and David. this were things that I wished are explore more throughout.

An overall unique read that I am grateful I picked up. Thank you @definitelybooks #pansing for the review copy in exchange for an honest review <3
