A very fun book to read, with a long a build for an admittedly short climax. Personally, I would have preferred a longer ending, or at least some wrapping up after the climax. The characters’ stories did come together very nicely for the ending, although there was a sense of some of the story being rendered pointless by the twists at the end.
The best of the world building for me is the returned - it’s very well explored how a system of government based on them would affect things. The magic system itself though I find a bit limited and contrived - it makes for some cool sequences but doesn’t really prompt as much thought and excitement as the author’s other works. The characters are also a little bit lacking, but enjoyable throughout anyway.
