Empire of Flame and Thorns by Marion Blackwood
2.25
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No

This book had so much potential, but it ended up feeling shallow. The main character was supposed to be over a hundred years old, part of a resistance, and motivated by this huge life goal, but she had about as much substance as wet cardboard. We never really learn who she is, where she lives, what here interests are, or why we should care. She has maybe two indirect interactions with the “resistance” she supposedly lives for, one at the beginning and one at the end, and that’s it.

The story itself was underdeveloped, like the framework for something bigger that never got built. It leaned heavily on recycled tropes (I caught some straight-up ACOTAR references), rushed into insta-love, and gave me no chance to use any critical thinking along the way. Some readers might like a spoon-fed, easy story, but I found it boring and predictable.

In short: great idea, wasted potential, and not a series I’ll be continuing.
